Case
Hertek Safety is part of the Hertek Group, the companies in the group are specialised in offering customised end-to-end solutions for fire safety and care technology. It’s in their core to make the world safer.
Hertek Safety is the market leader in the field of innovative safety solutions for fire detection and evacuation, including emergency lighting.
Over the years, Hertek Safety has grown organically in the field of digital, with a focus on digital solutions that, through insight and control over fire alarm systems, increase fire safety.
Due to their organic growth, it became clear to Hertek Safety that a more well-considered digital foundation is needed to properly facilitate their customers, achieve their business goals and realise further growth.
Hertek Safety asked us for support in their broad digital domain: (business) strategic questions, technological questions, data-related questions.
They were looking for someone with the technical knowledge and skills of a CTO, the business analytical perspective of a business consultant and the human eyes of an investigative designer. And at the same time with the executive power to bring ideas to life in a most practical and logical way.

Business to business, empowering professionals
Hertek Safety had a good perspective of the questions they came across in their organisation. The core of those questions could be traced back to how and which technological choices had to be made to fulfil the right digital need for their most important stakeholders and customers.
This required understanding the needs and workflow of their end users, translating these into concrete solutions and at the same time connecting them to technological choices and their business goals.
This need required a team with a mix of different skills that is able to help outline and implement a digital strategy from start to finish.
This means that we have had a professional, multidisciplinary team of business consultants, solution architects and human centred designers and developers help Hertek Safety develop and implement their digital strategy. With the aim of taking the next step in the digital evolution of Hertek Safety.
We started with a Discover & Strategise phase. In order to come to a digital strategy and its execution, we worked in three core trajectories that ran parallel and fed and reinforced each other in terms of information and data:
The project started with an extensive context mapping across all domains: business, users, stakeholders. The focus was on collecting important data that helped map out the priorities of Hertek Safety.
Business consultancy:
Under the leadership of business heavyweight Roy Scheerder from the fresk.digital skills network, we took on the business consultancy part. We did this in collaboration with the management of Hertek and their most important stakeholders.
With them we went on a journey of exploration to gain insight into what it takes to be a digital company. With the help of instruments and models such as business model canvas and capability models we mapped out the value streams, value creation, (market) opportunities and more. This led to formulating the right question and need for the client and provided important input for the digital strategy.
Digital Strategy:
Within the ecosystem of Hertek Safety, we have mapped the internal and external stakeholders and their roles and responsibilities and their connection to each other. In addition, we mapped out their technology and performed a tech audit on the existing technical environments.
With this information, we were able to bring the opportunities and weaknesses of the as-is technical situation to light. This resulted in a service blueprint with areas containing four important opportunities.
As a prelude to the drafting and designing (Concept & Design) of possible new digital solutions, we have defined the scope for the meaningful digital product.
Customer journey mapping
As part of the input for the digital strategy and the concrete digital solutions, we have mapped the process and the ecosystem of use. We have done this by means of:
In the translation to concrete customer journeys, the pains and gains have been made visible.
Concept & Design
All information, documentation and analyses have given us and Hertek a lot of insights about Hertek Safety, its stakeholders and her customers.
The opportunities we have defined can therefore be easily and in a validated way be translated into digital solutions that contribute to the goals of Hertek Safety.
From this Concept & Design phase concrete digital solutions can be derived for digital creation.
Designing a digital strategy is like a multi-headed monster that requires expertise in many dimensions. Fresk.digital has this knowledge in-house, but the real added value comes from the fact that the fresk team is able to translate this into comprehensible management language. We were looking for a versatile party that can spar and guide at senior management as well as at an operational level, and we found that in fresk! We worked together on all levels and thanks to their special focus on handover, as Hertek, we are now able to build up our digital organisation and capture the uncovered opportunities.
In the end the need of Hertek Safety was to launch a solution that seamlessly fits their user process. That is why, in this project, everything was done to gather insight, structure it and translate it into a concrete plan.
With all this information we were able to gain insights that gave them more control over their business and over the steps they need to take towards digital. Because of this, Hertek Safety knows very well what the impact is for their business and their stakeholders and customers, and with this information they can therefore make substantiated choices in priorities and where to invest.
Very specifically, Hertek Safety has:
